Discover Vice & Virtue Restaurant And Cocktail Bar

Walking into Vice & Virtue Restaurant And Cocktail Bar feels like stepping into a place that understands balance. Located at 40 Broadway, Schenectady, NY 12305, United States, this spot has quietly built a reputation among locals who want good food without pretense and cocktails that feel thoughtfully made rather than rushed. I first stopped by on a chilly evening after work, and what stood out immediately was how relaxed the room felt-low lighting, warm wood tones, and a staff that actually takes time to talk you through the menu instead of reciting it.

The menu leans modern American with global touches, and it’s clear the kitchen cares about technique. During one visit, I watched the open kitchen prep a pork belly dish using a slow-braise method that mirrors what the Culinary Institute of America teaches for maximizing tenderness while preserving flavor. The result was rich without being heavy, paired with seasonal vegetables that tasted fresh rather than decorative. According to USDA data, restaurants that prioritize seasonal sourcing often deliver higher nutrient retention, and that attention shows here in both flavor and presentation.

Cocktails are where the name really makes sense. The bar program focuses on balance-sweet, bitter, and acidic notes working together. I tried a bourbon-based drink built with house-made bitters and fresh citrus, and the bartender explained their batching process, which helps maintain consistency during busy hours. The James Beard Foundation has long emphasized that consistency is one of the key markers of a high-quality bar program, and this place clearly takes that idea seriously. You can taste it in every pour.

What makes the experience feel trustworthy is how transparent the staff is. When I asked about allergens for a friend with dietary restrictions, the server didn’t guess. Instead, they checked directly with the kitchen and even suggested a modified version of a dish that still kept its original character. That kind of care lines up with CDC food safety recommendations, which stress clear communication between front and back of house as a way to reduce risk and improve guest confidence.

Reviews around town often mention how the restaurant fits different occasions, and that matches my experience. I’ve seen couples on date nights, coworkers sharing small plates after hours, and families stopping in early for dinner. The location on Broadway makes it easy to find, especially if you’re already exploring downtown Schenectady. Parking can be tight on weekends, which is worth noting, but most guests seem to agree it’s a small trade-off for the overall experience.

One regular I spoke with at the bar told me he comes in weekly and always orders what he calls bold comfort food, while another described the cocktail list as surprisingly refined for a neighborhood spot. Those comments echo what many online reviews point out: the restaurant doesn’t chase trends, but it stays current by doing the basics extremely well. That approach aligns with research from the National Restaurant Association, which shows diners value quality and consistency more than novelty alone.

There are a few limitations worth mentioning. The menu isn’t huge, so if you’re looking for endless options, you might feel constrained. However, the upside is that each dish feels intentional rather than filler. From the way plates are seasoned to how drinks are garnished, everything reflects a clear point of view. In a dining scene where places often try to be everything at once, this restaurant stands out by knowing exactly what it wants to be.

  • 10 out of 10 highly recommend!! My husband and I dined at Vice & Virtue on our 1 year anniversary trip through New York. The meal was phenomenal! Hannah, our waitress was so kind and helpful. It truly was a perfect dining experience.

  • I had Mojo Chicken thighs and my husband had Chicken Caprese. I thought food was just okay, little blunt and not so flavorful but my husband loved his and mine, so my opinion is really personal preference I would say. This is a big restaurant so maybe you can just walk in on Friday Saturday for dinner to take a table. Update on May 22 2025 The menu changed and they added more interesting. We had pasta, chicken salad cups, and croquettes. They were all good I upgraded from 4 stars to 5 stars.

  • Absolutely FANTASTIC experience from the moment we first walked in the door until we left with our full bellies. I took my father figure and his partner of 37 years out on a night on the town. They are well-known foodies with impeccable taste and high expectations. Both of them were blown away by their meals. The presentation was thoughtful and visually appealing, the flavors were imaginative and striking. The staff was so welcoming, friendly and fun. This was a Saturday night outing, so the place was quite busy but we never felt overlooked or neglected, as everyone was very attentive, polite and prompt in reacting to our requests. The main ingredient that made this night memorable was the palpable atmosphere of love, acceptance and "good vibes" all around. I believe this is what makes Vice&Virtue a very special place with exciting future in the Capital Region. Come and make memories at this awesome venue! Highly recommend: 11 out of 10! ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

  • Absolutely loved my experience at vice and virtue! The atmosphere was warm and inviting, making it the perfect spot for a cozy dinner. The staff was incredibly attentive and friendly, ensuring that we felt right at home. Now, onto the food—every dish we ordered was a masterpiece. The flavors were bold and perfectly balanced. I highly recommend trying the pit try (can’t beat chefs meat), which was a standout with its delightful combination of ingredients. To top it off, the dessert was heavenly! It was the perfect ending to a fantastic meal. I can't wait to return and explore more of the menu. Highly recommend this gem to anyone looking for a memorable dining experience!

  • Came here on a Saturday night. I ordered one the weekend specials which was half a Smoked chicken, mashed potatoes, baked beans and a jalapeño biscuit. The chicken was nice and flavorful, definitely got the smokey flavor and wasn’t dry at all. Mashed potatoes were nice and the baked beans good but wish I knew there was bacon in them as I don’t eat bacon and had to pick it out. Our waitress was nice and attentive. Only weird thing was felt like everyone was seated in a back room which was full, but when we left the rest of the place was pretty empty. I would recommend and plan on coming back!
